Investigation launched after man injured in microlight plane crash in Co Clare

An investigation has been launched into the cause of a microlight aeroplane crash which left one man injured.

The incident involving a paramotor took place at Oughtmama near Bellharbour on the edge of the Burren in Co Clare.

A group of enthusiasts were observing the wheel-mounted paramotor taking off when the operator appeared to lose control and crash into a stone wall on Friday night.

It is understood it was caught in an unexpected crosswind before crashing however, the quick-thinking pilot disconnected engine power before impact, preventing a more serious collision.

The man was treated at the scene before being taken to University Hospital Galway.

He is understood to have sustained multiple broken bones.

A witness said: “The buggy frame did its job and protected him from more serious injury.”
