Investigation launched after man dies in flat fire

An investigation has been launched after a man died in a flat fire.

Police and fire were called to a property in Market Street in Highbridge, Somerset, just after 11am on Friday (November 8) following reports of black smoke billowing from the flat.

Upon arrival crews found a fire in a storage area at the rear of the property which had spread to the home, causing extensive damage.

A forensic investigation has been launched as police are treating the death as "unexplained", reports Somerset Live.

Market Street was closed in both directions for hours yesterday as emergency services remained at the scene.

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a property fire in Market Street in Highbridge on Friday morning around 11.15am.

“The occupant of the flat – a man – has sadly died.

"A road closure remains in place at the scene.

"We are treating the death as unexplained and enquiries into the incident continue.”

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "Two fire engines from Burnham-on-Sea, one from Bridgwater and one from Taunton, were all sent to report of smoke issuing from a domestic property.

"On arrival crews confirmed that there was a fire at the rear of the property in a storage area that had spread to the property.

"At 2.45 crews had extinguished the fire.

"This was a fire involving a 2 story flat, there was 90 per cent fire and 100 per cent smoke damage to the property.

"The cause of the fire is still being investigated."
