Investigation launched after 'malicious' blazes destroy North Shields allotments

An investigation has been launched into a 'malicious' fire which took place in North Shields.

Firefighters were called to the scene after the fire broke out at the River View allotments on Tanners' Bank on Sunday evening.

Neighbours were asked by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service to shut windows and doors as they dealt with the blaze at around 10pm.

Photos show how allotment buildings overlooking Tanners' Bank were destroyed by the blaze.

The buildings were left blackened and smoke damaged despite the efforts of firefighters.

Martin Farrow, service delivery station manager at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: "On Sunday evening four of our crews attended two fires at River View allotments on Tanners' Bank in North Shields – one of them serious enough to require the firefighters to battle the fire for nearly two-hours and causing severe structural damage. In the end, six appliances were required across the two incidents."

He confirmed that the fires are now being treated as cases of arson and added that a joint investigation alongside Northumbria Police has been launched.

"Both fires are being treated as malicious and actions like these are reckless and completely irresponsible with the worrying aspect being that someone could easily have been seriously injured or even killed," Mr Farrow added.

"The Fire Service along with our colleagues at Northumbria Police are investigating the incidents."

He also reminded the public of the pressure that deliberate acts such as these place on emergency services as well as welcoming anyone who may have information which could help with their investigation to come forward.

"If our crews are tackling deliberate fires it means that their services aren’t available if an accidental residential fire takes place elsewhere in the region – potentially putting people’s lives at risk," he said.

"If you have any further information about these incidents please contact 101."
