Investigation launched after large fire at recycling plant

A company is investigating after a large blaze in a recycling plant in St Helens.

Five fire engines were called to Viridor’s St Helens Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment recycling facility at about 9pm on Easter Monday to tackle a large fire.

Once there firefighters found the building "well alight" and warned people living nearby to close their windows and doors.

Nearly two hours later firefighters managed to extinguish the fire, at about 10.50pm, and they remained on scene until 12.20am to monitor it.

On Tuesday morning, a spokeswoman for Viridor confirmed the Environment Agency were informed about the large fire.

The spokeswoman said: "There were no injuries and no significant damage to the recycling facility.

"The EA has been notified and the cause of the fire is being investigated. Viridor is grateful to Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service for its assistance."

Significant smoke could be seen in the area last night as the recycling plant was evacuated.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters entered the plant to tackle flames on the upper floor.

The force also warned anyone with existing health conditions to keep medicines nearby, and if anyone suffered any ill effects they were to call NHS 111.
