Investigation launched after huge fire at Nottingham's Strathdon Hotel

An investigation has been launched into the cause of a major fire at a disused hotel in Nottingham city centre.

Eight fire engines were dispatched to the scene of the incident at the Strathdon Hotel, on Derby Road, shortly after midday on Monday (August 30).

A large section of Derby Road was cordoned off for the entire afternoon while firefighters extinguished the blaze - which initially caused thick plumes of black smoke to emerge from the building.

As a result, there was widespread disruption to public transport, with NCT buses diverting services out of the city.

Incident Commander Simon Lilley told Nottinghamshire Live that firefighters were searching the building to make sure no-one was trapped inside.

He said that crews were met by "very heavy smoke".

"There was a lot of smoke coming across Derby Road so it was certainly to begin with a very significant incident," he said.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed that no-one was found in the building, with the incident concluding at around 4.15pm.

The fire is believed to have begun in the stairwell.

In a tweet, the service added: "The incident at the Strathdon Hotel has now been resolved. Fourteen firefighters in breathing apparatus with two hose reel jets, positive pressure ventilation were used.

"Fire investigation is in progress working closely with Nottinghamshire Police to determine the cause."

Derby Road also reopened, ensuring that key bus routes leading out of the city could resume as normal.

"Buses are back to normal route," Nottingham City Transport confirmed in a tweet.

The pink, orange and turquoise lines had previously been affected as a result of the closure.

Fire engines sent to the scene came from stations including Highfield, Carlton, West Bridgford and Arnold.
