Investigation launched after fire breaks out in a flat in Gateshead

An investigation is under way after a fire broke out in a Gateshead flat.

Emergency services were called to Eastbourne Avenue in the Bensham area on Monday evening after the blaze started in an upstairs flat in the property.

Three fire engines attended and the flames were extinguished in just under 20 minutes.

The property has been severely damaged by fire and smoke but luckily no one was inside at the time.

A spokeswoman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We got a call at 9.55pm and we arrived on scene at 9.59pm.

"We sent two crews from Gateshead and one from Newcastle Central.

"There was a fire in a flat and the bedroom was 100% severely damaged by fire, the bathroom was 75% severely damaged by fire and the hallway was 50% severely damaged by fire.

"The rest of the property was 100% severely damaged by smoke.

"There was nobody inside the property at the time and a fire investigation is ongoing."
