Investigation launched after death of inmate at Swansea Prison

An inmate has died at Swansea prison. The fifty-two-year-old has been named as David Bassett.

The death took place at the prison in Oystermouth Road last Saturday, December 1.

A spokesman for the Prison Service said an independent investigation would be launched into the death.

The spokesman added: “HMP Swansea prisoner David Bassett died in prison on December 1.

“As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

The circumstances of Mr Bassett’s death are not yet known. But it follows a report published in January last year which concluded that the prison was not fit for purpose, because of what were claimed to be its low standards and failure to do more to prevent eight people taking their own lives over the previous six years.

HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) said each of the pevious deaths at Swansea Prison were within the first week of arrival.

Following publication of the report, The Prison Governors Association said the “issues highlighted in the Swansea report are fairly systemic across the prison system”.
