They stated: "Four appliances were in attendance, three from Northumberland Fire and Rescue and one from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue. The fire has now been extinguished.

"No one was injured or required medical attention."

The fire, has however, been confirmed to have started on first floor of the pub, with the blaze subsequently spreading to the roof.

"Fire investigators are now at the scene to carry out a full investigation into the cause of the fire."

Middle Street will remain closed to all vehicles until around 5pm.
