Investigation launched after attempted armed robbery at Northumberland shop

Police have launched an investigation after an armed thug attempted to rob an off-licence in Northumberland.

Officers were called after it was reported that a man wearing a balaclava had entered A&G Food, Wine & Off-Licence in Lynemouth armed with a knife.

The man was spotted on CCTV behind the counter and demanded cash from the till before fleeing the scene empty handed.

The West Market Street store confirmed none of their staff members were injured as a result of the incident on Saturday, August 1.

An investigation was launched and officers are trawling through CCTV footage in a bid to identify the culprit.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "Shortly after 12.41pm on Saturday (August 1) we received a report of an attempted robbery at an off licence on West Market Street in Lynemouth.

"It was reported that a male had entered the store and tried to steal a quantity of cash from the till before fleeing the scene.

"An investigation was launched and officers have been busy reviewing CCTV and carrying out enquiries to locate the offender.
