Investigation launched after arson attack at Northern Quarter apartment block

An investigation has been launched after an arson attack at an apartment block in the Northern Quarter.

The fire was started in the stairwell of the flats on Hilton Street, off Stevenson Square, on Wednesday evening (March 11).

The building was evacuated for a short time, a fire service spokesman said.

Three fire engines were scrambled to the scene just before 7pm.

The road was cordoned off.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire was extinguished quickly. Two hose reels and breathing apparatus were used.

"We are liaising with GMP, it is suspected to be deliberate.

"We were there for four and a half hours.

"The building was evacuated but not for the whole time we were there."

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted about the incident on Wednesday evening.

They said: "Due to a nearby building fire, Hilton Street (City Centre) is currently closed in both directions between Oldham Street and Stevenson Square."

It is unclear at this stage whether any arrests have been made.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.
