Investigation launched after 5G mast fire in Whitley Bay

An investigation has been launched into the cause of a 5G mast fire in Whitley Bay.

Emergency crews attended the blaze on Beaumont Drive on Sunday (February 6) morning after the fire was reported.

Two crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene.

However, the blaze was extinguished relatively quickly.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm we attended an incident on Sunday morning (6th Feb) on Beaumont Drive in Whitley Bay.

"Our fire control received a call at 5:46am and two crews from Tynemouth Community Fire Station were on the scene in a matter of minutes to extinguish a fire at a 5G mast.

"Our crews left the scene at 6:20am."

It is not clear at this stage whether the fire was started maliciously and Northumbria Police have confirmed that enquiries into the incident are underway.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 6am on Sunday we were alerted to a fire on Beaumont Drive, Whitley Bay.

“It was reported that a 5G mast was alight. The fire was extinguished and enquiries are on-going.”
