Investigation into death of Strangeways prisoner who killed fellow inmate continues

Investigations are still ongoing after the death of a Strangeways inmate in 2018.

Kieron Simpson died at the prison, now known as HMP Manchester, three years ago in May.

His death prompted an independent investigation to be launched by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman and subsequently led to the opening of an inquest at Manchester Coroners Court.

The 29-year-old had been jailed in April 2015 for the manslaughter of another prisoner, Robert Bryan, at HMP Doncaster in February of the same year.

Bryan had been standing in the communal area of the prison when Simpson approached him from behind and punched him once in the face.

The blow knocked the 43-year-old to the ground. He fell unconscious and was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead later that day.

Simpson pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Sheffield Crown Court and was handed a four-year jail sentence. He had already been serving a 16-week sentence for burglary.

A pre-inquest review hearing held at Manchester Coroner's Court today (Monday) heard that Simpson died on May 2, 2018.

Interested parties, including representatives of the man's family, the Prison Service and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust, are still in the process of gathering and collating evidence ahead of a full inquest.

Speaking at today's hearing, coroner Zak Golombeck outlined what he expects the inquest to cover.

He said: "The scope will be the appropriateness of Mr Simpson's mental health care during his time at HMP Manchester; the management of Mr Simpson as a complex prisoner with a history of violence towards others, substance misuse and mental health issues; and whether Mr Simpson's death could have been avoided."

He adjourned the inquest with the hope of scheduling a full hearing for later this year.
