Investigation continues as inquest opens into death of 'respected, loving dad' in horror crash

An inquest has opened following the death of a 36-year-old father whose car collided with a tree.

Publican Tom Benson died at the scene of the crash on Lever Park Avenue, in the Horwich area of Bolton on November 6 2021.

Senior coroner for Manchester West Timothy Brennand, sitting at Bolton, was told that a post mortem examination carried out by pathologist Dr Patrick Waugh revealed Tom had died of multiple injuries.

The police investigation into the accident is still ongoing and Mr Brennand has been asked for more time for Greater Manchester Police's fatal collision reconstruction team to complete its report.

A provisional date for the full inquest was fixed for April 25.

But, Mr Brennand has requested statements from Thomas' GP, the police coroners officer, and North West Ambulance Serice, whose parademics tended to Tom by February 18.

At the time of the accident, it was reported that a three-year-old child was taken to hospital with a shoulder injury and a 31-year-old woman was also treated for injuries to her leg and arm.

An eight-year-old child was also injured in the crash.

Tom, of Fairways, Horwich, worked in and ran several pubs and bars in the town, including the Harry Potter-themed bar, Crux Emporium, and has been described as 'a truly respected' man and a 'loving daddy', by his mum Lydia, also from Horwich.
