Investigation continues after fire rips through 91-room Jesmond Hotel

The cause of a fire at the Caledonian Hotel in Jesmond has not yet been confirmed.

Crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service remain on scene on Osbourne Road on Saturday working to try and determine the cause of the blaze.

Emergency services were called to the 91-bedroom hotel at around at 5.23pm on Friday where they were met with giant flames and plumes of black smoke rising from the building.

Guests who arrived on the scene expecting to check in to the hotel were directed to the nearby Osborne Hotel, where staff had set up a command centre.

No injuries were reported, but some of the street's many bars and homes in the immediate vicinity were evacuated.

The fire service confirmed they had sent seven fire engines, one aerial ladder platform, one command support unit and two senior officers to the scene and urged residents to close all of their windows.
