Investigation after street-performer suffered 'homophobic abuse' in Nottingham city centre

A video has emerged of a street performer in Nottingham city centre being subjected to 'homophobic abuse'.

Police are investigating, describing it as a hate incident in Upper Parliament Street and that they "are aware that a video, in which homophobic abuse is shouted".

In the video, Pablo Woodward, 39, can be seen performing as his alter ego, The Disco Bunny, in Upper Parliament Street.

During his routine, on Monday, April 1, the Brazil-born entertainer was confronted by a man, who was filmed shouting insults towards him.

In the six-minute video of the incident, a large crowd can be seen gathered in the area, including children in school uniforms, with some members of the public trying to intervene.

The footage has been viewed more than 310,000 times, and Mr Woodward posted a response to the incident on social media.

He said: "Thank you for the wonderful support that I've had from many different people.

"The incident happened, and I didn't think much of it, but days past and I've reflected on it.

"I am myself, and I'm keeping up what I'm gonna do, and thank you very much.

"[The incident] is no way reflective of the wonderful people of Nottingham."

Mr Woodward said he revisited Nottingham this weekend.

In another social media post, he added: "The other day, on the street, I was a victim of hate crime.

"I wanted no punches thrown, and if one were to be thrown, I wanted it at me, to no one else, and only from the aggressor.

"Yesterday, I returned to the scene of the crime, to pay my respects (by disco bunnying there again) to the many who had supported me on that day."

Mr Woodward - who is from Brighton - performs under his glittery persona in towns and cities across the UK, travelling in a camper van dubbed the 'Bunny Bus'.

He achieved internet fame in 2016 when a video of an impromptu street dance with a random elderly woman went viral - racking up more than 70 million views.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "Officers are investigating after a report of a hate incident in Upper Parliament Street, Nottingham, just before 6pm on 1 April.

"We have spoken to the victim, a 39-year-old man, and are aware that a video of the incident, in which homophobic abuse is shouted, has been shared online and this will be investigated as part of the enquiry.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that could help the enquiry is urged to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 729 of 1 April 2019."

NottinghamshireLive have chosen not to publicise the video because it shows children under the age of 16.
