Inverness man shot and arrested in police standoff remains at hospital with 'serious injuries'

A masked man who was shot by police during an alleged stand off with officers on an Inverness street remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Armed cops swooped on Polvanie View at 3pm today after receiving a report of concern for a person.

On arrival, a fire had broken out at a property with neighbours evacuated from their homes by fire crews who also attended.

Nobody was injured as a result of the blaze however a 40-year-old man was shot at by armed officers.

He has been arrested in connection with the incident and was taken to Raigmore Hospital for treatment where he remains.

A statement from Police Scotland said the circumstances, as with any firearm deployment, have been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner ( Pirc ).

Inquiries into the incident remain ongoing and anyone with footage of the ordeal is urged to contact police via 101.

Meanwhile, the force added the incident was contained and said it does not pose any threat to the wider public.

Police patrols have been stepped up in the area for the coming days.

Chief Superintendent Conrad Trickett said: “We want to reassure the public that this incident is contained and there is no threat to the wider public.

“There will be extra patrols in the area over the coming days and anyone with any concerns should contact police.

“We would also ask anybody with any information or footage from the incident to get in touch.”
