Inverness look to slash wages as Highlanders become latest club devastated by coronavirus shutdown

Inverness Caledonian Thistle have asked all their staff to take 20 per cent wage cuts and to defer their bonuses until the end of the season.

The Premiership promotion chasers are the latest club to try and put major cost savings measures in place to help them through the current coronavirus shutdown.

Hearts have already urged their players to cut their wages in half for the time being as the financial pinch is being felt the length and breadth of the country.

Caley Thistle’s squad, who currently sit second in the Championship, are amongst some of the lowest paid in the league.

Their players were on Wednesday night in talks with PFA Scotland over the ongoing situation.

The Highlanders hope their team will agree to the drop but hope to put all staff back up to full wages if they fall into the proposed government job detention scheme.

The bombshell news was put to Caley Jags staff via a letter from chairman Ross Morrison and chief executive Scot Gardiner yesterday (Wed).

The cuts, however, won’t affect anyone at the club who is earning less than £24,000.

The struggling Highlanders made an £892,000 loss for the year ended in May and had to ask for further investment to help with their running costs, that saw an extra £500,000 invested in the club in January.

Meanwhile, League One Peterhead’s players are set to agree a cut, believed to be around 30 per cent.

Record Sport revealed yesterday that Elgin City had asked their staff to take 67 per cent cuts in a bid to get them through the black days where there is no match day income.

Dumbarton’s staff have already agreed to cut their wages in half, while other clubs like Raith Rovers, Partick Thistle and Livingston have started schemes to bring in monies from out with.
