An inventor is hoping to smash a world record after building the 'world's longest mobility scooter'. The machine measures six metres - as long as an elephant.
It's almost three metres longer than the current record-holder. But the machine must pass stringest tests before being handed the record-breaking title.
Deigner Kevin Nicks, 57, a self-employed designer and builder from Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire has already created the world's fastest shed and the quickest wheelbarrow on the planet - 53.85 mph. He decided to take on a new challenge after starting a mobility scooter repair service.
But rather than just beating the previous by a few inches, Kevin decided to go all in and build one as long as physically possible. “I just started my own mobility scooter business, doing sale service repairs – and had just finished another GWR project, which is the fastest speed record on a motorised BMX bike.
"I just thought I would take a look at mobility scooter records and discovered the last one was 10ft 4ins long. I thought, ‘Oh, I could so beat that!' If you've got to beat a record, you've got to smash it - so made it as long as I possibly could!"
The scooter, originally built from an eight mph broken mobility scooter, only took Kevin three days to build and cost him just £180. He tackled various problems along the way - one being how to transport the vehicle, but swiftly found a solution by splitting it into two halves now.
To break the Guinness World Record, the machine must be a standard mobility scooter with no wheels in the middle to support its extra length. It also has to travel at least 100 metres.
Kevin says he “cannot wait” to show off the machine with his new ‘Long Vehicle’ sticker. And with no minimum or maximum speed required in the record attempt he can cruise along or choose to burn rubber.
The inventor, who loves his work and hopes to continue his "crazy" ventures, said: "A lot of what I do is to inspire other people to go and do fun things. The secret to it all should be having fun and being silly!”
The longest mobility scooter demonstration is taking place at Chipping Norton, Oxford. The record will occur at Elvington Airfield, Yorkshire on September 25 and 26 at the Straightliners automotive records event.
