Invasive Japanese Knotweed discovered on Dumbarton flagship £2.5m walkway

An invasive plant which can damage buildings has been discovered on the site of a flagship £2.5million walkway.

Japanese Knotweed is causing problems on the project to create the link between Dumbarton Castle and the High Street.

The waterfront path development is underway to help clean up the foreshore area and is set to include tourist information along the way to promote Dumbarton’s heritage.

It is hoped the project will be completed by December.

However, during an infrastructure, regeneration and economic development (IRED) committee meeting, it was heard there are some issues in carrying out the work.

Head of regeneration and economic development, Jim McAloon told committee members the species had been found on areas of the foreshore.

However, he added that the project was still making headway. The total cost of the 1.140 metre walk and cycle way set to be completed next year is expected to be £2.5m, with the council earmarking £1.5m for the project.

The proposal is part of a wider regeneration project for the town centre, which also includes a Lidl supermarket.
