Inundated allure

The spectacle of a "submerged forest" has appeared at the Shirakawa Lake in Iide, Yamagata Prefecture, creating a fantastic scene of lush green leaves and white willow trees reflected on the water with canoes cruising under the azure sky.

The woodland becomes flooded each year when snowmelt flows in and raises the lake's water level.

According to the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry's Shirakawa Dam management office, the phenomenon can be seen from mid-April, and after the Golden Week holidays, the color changes to a deeper green that lasts until mid-May.
