Intu issues update on Broadmarsh shopping centre redevelopment

Shopping centre owner intu has given an update on the multi-million-pound regeneration of the Broadmarsh after the coronavirus pandemic shut down construction.

Both the car park and intu Broadmarsh are midway through multi-million-pound regeneration projects, which have been earmarked to be complete in summer 2021.

The car park and bus station development is being led by the city council while intu is behind the redevelopment of the shopping centre.

The overall Broadmarsh area regeneration is estimated to cost £250 million, which includes £89 million for the shopping centre.

But following the Government’s update that all non-essential shops are to close, intu said the mall is now operating on a "partially closed" basis.

The construction site at the Broadmarsh centre has been closed to all but essential safety and security employees. Contractors are keeping the situation under constant review.

Nigel Wheatley, centre director at intu Broadmarsh, said: “Our centres sit at the heart of many of their communities and provide access to vital services such as pharmacies and supermarkets.

"As many of these essential services can only be reached through the centres themselves, we will ensure all our visitors are able to access them whilst supporting those retailers who need to stay open.

“A small number of our team will be on hand to make sure the centre remains clean and safe to visit. Opening times will vary so please check the website for details."

Mr Wheatley added that when works could restart or if the unveiling date would be pushed back was being kept "under constant review".

“With regards to our regeneration works at intu Broadmarsh, the contractor has closed its site to all but essential safety and security employees," he added.

"They are keeping the situation under constant review and will return when they are happy it is safe to do so. We will continue to work closely with all parties.

“We would like to thank our fantastic team at intu who are working very hard in very challenging circumstances, to support our retailers, serve our communities and take care of one another. Our thoughts are with everyone during this difficult time.”
