Intruder 'armed with crossbow' sectioned after being arrested in grounds of Windsor Castle

An 'intruder' who was allegedly found in the grounds of Windsor Castle has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The 19-year-old man was arrested following the incident at the royal residence at 8.30am on Christmas Day.

Following a search, police also reportedly recovered a crossbow.

The teenager, from Southampton, was arrested on suspicion of breach or trespass of a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was taken to police custody where he underwent a mental health assessment.

He has since been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and remains in the care of medical professionals, a spokesman for the Met Police said.

In a statement, the force said: “The man was taken into custody and has undergone a mental health assessment – he has since been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and remains in the care of medical professionals.

“Inquiries into the full circumstances of this incident are being progressed by Metropolitan Police Specialist Operations.”

The force confirmed security processes were triggered within moments of the alleged intruder entering the ground.

He did not access any buildings.

The Queen had been celebrating Christmas at Windsor Castle at the time of the incident with Prince Charles and Camilla.

They were joined by Prince Edward and his wife Sophie and their children, Louise and James.
