Intrepid Lanarkshire man walks from his home to Ben Lomond in aid of charity

A Coatbridge fitness fanatic is enjoying a well-earned rest after embarking on and epic 46 miles trek for charity.

Callum McKay took on the challenge to raise awareness and funds for the charity, Mission Rabies - a vaccination programme in Africa.

A Strathclyde University graduate, Callum is on the look out for a job in environmental engineering.

But, with the pandemic impacting the intake on graduate schemes for many companies, he is currently working as a barman in the Mint restaurant in Coatbridge.

The 26-year-oldtold Lanarkshire Live : “My long term aim is to do eight big walks each year.

“I completed my first sponsored walk to Greenock in May this year and I raised over £600 for the charity. Then I did another couple of walks after that."

That included a walk to Cowdenbeath and North Queensferry, with his last foray a walk to Ben Lomond.

He added: "I didn’t do any fundraising this time around, but my dad asked me to wear my t-shirt to raise awareness for the charity and a couple of people have given me donations.

“The walks I have been doing so far put me in good stead for it. I got one of my friends to drive me to Lennoxtown and I left supplies there such as water and sweets to keep me going.

“It worked out about 39 miles to the bottom of the mountain and in total I walked up to 46 miles."

He told us: "When I got to the top I was pretty chuffed and I got a wee burst of energy. I struggled to keep my eyes open afterwards and my legs were quite sore and I slept for about 16 hours.

“I was mostly going to do the walk for fun and my dad asked me to wear my Mission Rabies tee-shirt and I’ve got some sponsorship walks planned for next year which I’m planning to put on social media.”

And the former St Andrew's pupil was delighted with his achievement, with girlfriend Danielle Small and his proud parents Andy and Joanna and little sister, Bonnie, cheering him on.

Callum told us: “They are all very supportive and my friends and girlfriend Danielle comes with me, but not the full way and some of my friends also join me on my walks.

"They are a great help and my pal was happy to drive me up to Ben Lomond and I was really grateful for that.”
