Intrepid EK duo scale the heights as part of challenge for Alzheimer’s Research

An intrepid duo from East Kilbride are reaching new heights for a charity close to both their hearts.

In 2019, Susan Dunbar and Jenny McLeod went on an adventure and completed the West Highland Way over five days and are taking on the challenge again this year - and this time they're tackling Ben Nevis on day six for good measure.

And it's all to help raise vital funds for dementia research.

At the weekend the pair looked out their hiking boots to start the climbs, so far raising £1000.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the country's leading charity specialising in finding preventions, treatments, and a cure for dementia.

Jenny told Lanarkshire Live : “This year we are doing it all over again over six days and hoping to complete Ben Nevis on day six, which Susan only learned recently.

"It has been a long time coming and we had snacks and determination.

"The weather has not been on our side this time, but we are determined to win. For everyone who has already donated, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

"With Alzheimer’s affecting both sides of the family and many friends’ families, it just seemed the right charity to choose.

"We hope you can dig deep and donate to this fantastic charity and help to find a cure for this awful illness and maybe along the way we can do some other adventures.”

Susan is taking on the challenge for her aunt and uncle while Jenny is doing it for a family member who wishes to remain anonymous.

Susan added: “My aunt and uncle received their telegraph from the Queen for 60 years of marriage. They were together until my aunt's care was too much for my uncle and she then went into a care home, which left my uncle devastated.”

Stacy Rowan, Scottish Regional Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “We’re so grateful to Susan and Jenny and their incredible efforts supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK.

"Dementia affects a significant proportion of the population – one in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition.

"Fantastic fundraising efforts like this will help us to make life-changing research breakthroughs for people with dementia.”
