'Intoxicated' learner driver skids down M62 then hides in bushes from police

An "intoxicated" learner driver who was seen skidding across the M62 was found hiding in a bush by police.

Katie McCabe, 27, crashed into the back of a van on the motorway near Liverpool on September 8, after her passenger pulled the handbrake on the car sending it skidding sideways across the carriageway.

The 27-year-old was sentenced earlier this year for carrying a big machete around Middlesbrough , telling the police "it was just to scare people".

She appeared back in court this week where she was banned from getting behind the wheel for 24 months, Teeside Live reports.

Teesside Magistrates' Court heard how it was around 6.45am on September 8, when a Volkswagen Golf driven by McCabe hit the back of a van on the M62 near Liverpool.

Prosecutor Rachel Stapleton said "intoxicated" McCabe hit the van from behind after her vehicle was "skidding sideways".

The van's occupants got out and observed McCabe was "under the influence", before she drove off, clipping the leg of one of the men.

She later crashed into a roundabout, fleeing the scene, before police found her hiding in a bush nearby.

The defendant told the police she had travelled from Middlesbrough to the Liverpool area that day.

Checks found McCabe had a provisional driving licence and was uninsured.

A roadside breath test showed she was over the drink-drive limit, but she refused to provide an evidential sample to the police.

She admitted failing to provide a specimen of blood and driving without insurance or a licence.

The court heard she has 30 convictions for 57 offences, most recently in February where she was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court for wandering the streets with a huge blade.

In interview for that offence the defendant told officers "I'm just going to tell you that the machete was mine and I was slashing it around.

"It was just to scare people, I wasn't going to hurt anyone."

She was handed a six month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months for that offence.

Concerning the most recent offence, Lee Goodchild, mitigating, said his client caused no damage to the other vehicle and "her passenger, for whatever stupid reason had pulled the handbrake".

He said "the evidence indicates there was no collision at all".

Mr Goodchild explained that McCabe didn't provide a sample of blood to the police because she had been injured in the second crash at the roundabout.

He added: "This lady has got significant mental health problems."

Magistrates sentenced McCabe, of Beckenham Gardens, Hemlington, to a £160 fine and ordered she pay a £34 victim surcharge, plus £85 in prosecution costs - a total of £279.

The money will be taken from her benefits.

She was also banned from getting behind the wheel for 24 months.
