'Intoxicated' driver crashed car in front of police and twice failed to provide specimens

A Staple Hill man whose life "spiralled out of control" after bereavement has been jailed.

Bristol Crown Court heard how Kieran Conway's mother died in 2018, after which he had turned to drink and drugs.

Twice police found him driving while under the influence, and both times he failed to provide blood or breath samples.

Conway, 24, of Shipman Court, pleaded guilty to failing to providing specimens as well as driving without insurance or a proper licence and assaulting an emergency worker.

Judge James Patrick jailed him for 14 months.

He told Conway: "It is a shame to see somebody like you in such a mess.

"The reality is if you don't sort yourself out you will spend longer and longer in custody."

Conway was banned from driving for four years, starting from his release from prison.

Nicholas Lee, prosecuting, said in May last year police in Weston-super-Mare saw a Nissan Micra being driven erratically on the A370.

After jumping a red traffic light it accelerated off and overtook a vehicle before colliding with a barrier at the side of the road.

Conway was arrested, taken to Weston General Hospital but refused to give a blood sample.

Having been bailed, in November last year police found Conway in the driver's seat of a Ford Focus, on the forecourt of a petrol station in Westerleigh Road, Bristol.

Mr Lee said: "He appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

"His eyes were glazed and his speech was slurred.

"He ran into an alleyway and police found him lying in bushes."

Conway failed to give a breath sample to police and became agitated, the court heard.

He kicked out at PC Daniel Burley, which the officer blocked, sustaining a sore wrist.

Nicholas Fridd, defending, said: "His mum died in 2018 and since the he's pretty much lost it, giving in to drink and drugs.

"He spiralled out of control.

"He recognizes it will be custody today and it is his first period in custody, unbelievably.

"He apologizes, through me, that its ended up as it has."
