Interviews, highlights: What Rockets learned from initial scrimmage

Saturday’s training camp practice, which was the last for the Rockets in Galveston, featured Houston’s first intrasquad scrimmage as the team gears up for its 2021-22 preseason opener on Tuesday.

“It was a good scrimmage,” said head coach Stephen Silas, who identified Eric Gordon, Christian Wood, Kevin Porter Jr., and Jae’Sean Tate as among the early standouts from training camp. “We played three quarters, and the guys seem like they’re in good shape.”

In his remarks to reporters, Silas continued:

It really is about the group being able to play well together. Guys are figuring out how they can play well with the next man. Today was a step, as far as guys playing well together.

We had a couple different groups of guys who we’ve kind of been concentrating on. Especially with the young guys, making sure they know what the strengths of their point guard is. Or that the point guard knows what the strengths of the bigs are.

The Rockets are at the end of their weeklong stint in coastal Galveston, which was designed to help the team bond off the court. Next week, they return to their usual Toyota Center home in Houston, where Washington and Miami will visit on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

Here’s a roundup of highlights, video interviews, and quotes from Saturday’s interviews with Silas, Jae’Sean Tate, and Alperen Sengun.
