Interview: Tim McGraw will cheer on Mets at Wrigley Field out of loyalty to his dad

Oct. 20--Tim McGraw plans on attending game three of the Cubs-New York Mets National League Championship Series Tuesday at Wrigley Field. And no, he's not singing the 7th inning stretch. The Cubs will show video of the late Ron Santo singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" on the video board during the 7th inning stretch, according to a Cubs spokesperson.

Even if McGraw, who has never been to Wrigley Field, wanted to sing the stretch, it's unlikely the Cubs would allow it at this game due to his allegiances.

"I'll have on my Mets sweatshirt," McGraw said Tuesday at his hotel in Chicago, where he was promoting America's Diabetes Challenge. "I've got to be loyal to my Dad's team. A good friend of mine, Brian O'Connell, works with Live Nation and he's a big Cubs fan. He offered me protection in case I need it."

McGraw's dad, Tug McGraw, spent the first half of his career with the Mets and the second half of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies. McGraw is a fan of both teams as a result and was wearing the World Series ring his late dad won with the Phillies Tuesday.

"I usually where it around this time of year -- World Series time," said McGraw.

If the Phillies were to face the Mets in the NLCS, McGraw said it would be tough to pick a side but likely would cheer for the Phillies because his dad played with them more recently than the Mets. He added that if the Mets were to lose to the Cubs in the NLCS, he would cheer for the Cubs in the World Series.

"I'm not not a Cubs fan," McGraw said. "I like the Cubs. And I'm a National League fan. Whoever wins the (National League) pennant I'll pull for in the World Series. But the Mets are hard to beat right now. They're on a roll."
