Interstellar, Christopher Nolan’s ambitious space odyssey about a last ditch mission to find a new home for humanity, has been named the most overrated film of 2014 by users of review aggregator site Metacritic.
Nolan’s futuristic epic, which has largely failed to set the awards season on fire, but did garner four nominations at the Baftas this morning, was named ahead of Oscar-tipped Richard Linklater coming-of-age drama Boyhood in the site’s annual poll.
The next most overrated films, according to Metacritic users, were comic book space opera Guardians of the Galaxy, dystopian blockbuster The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part One and another awards season favourite, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s black comedy Birdman.
However, in a somewhat confusing turn of events, Boyhood (first) and Interstellar (second) were also named the two best movies of the year by users. Boyhood also has the highest possible Metacritic rating, 100/100, from critics.
The top five best movies list was rounded out by Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, Birdman and Gone Girl, David Fincher’s popular, if controversial, adaptation of the slippery Gillian Flynn crime novel. Guardians of the Galaxy was just behind in sixth place.
Boyhood was also named as one of the winners of the annual Golden Tomato awards by rival aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes this week. Linklater’s twelve-years-in-the-making drama was cited as 2014’s best-reviewed film to get a wide release, with a positive (or “fresh”) review from 98 per cent of critics. Civil rights drama Selma was the top “limited release” movie, with an impressive 100 per cent “fresh” rating.
