Internet down in Glasgow east end: repairs underway after underground power cable explosion

Thousands of homes in Glasgow's east end continues to face major internet connection issues after an underground power cable exploded, blasting nearby digital services for local homes and businesses.

Openreach is undertaking major repairs following the explosion, which has affected residents since Sunday night. Engineers are expected to have most fibre-based broadband restored by tonight and some people already back in service.

Routers may need a reboot and service providers will be able to help with any ongoing issues.

The company has warned that repairs to the copper network are more complicated, with each line needing to be reconnected individually. This work will not be fully finished until late on Thursday, affecting a small percentage of lost services and some phone lines.

With the majority of people working from home and home schooling remaining in place for most pupils, the outage has caused widespread concern. Multiple people living in the affected areas of the east end have taken to social media to try and find answers to the issue.

Openreach patch manager Andy Baillie said: “The power cable explosion was like a hand grenade going off underground, and the damage to one of our main East End cable routes is extensive.

“We’re working round the clock to get everyone back online as fast as we can. The repairs are complex but we’re making steady progress. We’re sorry for the ongoing disruption and thank residents for their patience and understanding while we work on the fix.”
