International teams face off in Japanese karuta card game competition

Foreign players participate in an international group competition of kyogi karuta, a traditional Japanese one-on-one card game, held for the first time at Omi Jingu shrine in Otsu on Saturday. Ten teams from Japan and abroad gathered at the venue, which is known as a sacred place for karuta. A French team defeated one from Japan in the fierce final match. The classic card game is becoming popular in Japan and abroad thanks to the manga "Chihayafuru," which features high school students absorbed in playing it.
