International scrum-half departs regional rugby after just a season in Wales

Sam Hidalgo-Clyne is leaving the Scarlets after just a season in West Wales.

The Scotland international played 12 Guinness Pro14 games for the Llanelli-based team, starting four of them.

He was loaned out to Harlequins towards the end of the term and has now agreed via mutual consent to depart the Scarlets altogether.

“The boys are great and the fans very passionate, but it’s best for all concerned that I continue my rugby career elsewhere,” said the 25-year-old.

Scarlets general manager of rugby Jon Daniels said: “We wish Sam well for the future and thank him for his commitment to the Scarlets cause. I am sure he will be an asset to which club he joins for the next chapter of his career.”

Reports from France earlier in the week suggested Toulouse were interested in picking up the 12-cap scrum-half for the start of next season.

The French club are set to be without Sebastien Bezy and Antoine Dupont during the World Cup period and so need to bring in cover.

They are said to have Australian Ian Prior on their radar as well as Hidalgo-Clyne.

The Scot’s exit from the Scarlets had increasingly looked probable as they have three other No. 9s in place in Gareth Davies, Kieran Hardy and Jonathan Evans, while Dane Blacker is thought to be on his way from Cardiff Blues.

That Hidalgo-Clyne still has something to offer could be seen from his performances on loan for Harlequins, when he started in their European Challenge Cup semi-final against Clermont Auvergne and acquitted himself well.
