World Cup qualifying round-up: Wales fall to Belgium defeat as Ireland beaten by Serbia

Belgium got their revenge for Euro 2016 by beating their quarter-final conquerers Wales 3-1 on what was an intriguing night of World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

The Welsh got off to a dream start after a fabulous move ended with Harry Wilson tucking away Gareth Bale's flicked pass to put them 1-0 up early on.

But a long-range Kevin De Bruyne strike and a Thorgan Hazard header turned the game on its head before half-time.

And Romelu Lukaku added a penalty on 73 minutes to seal the win.

It was a similar story for Republic of Ireland, who were also defeated after going ahead.

Stephen Kenny's side scored for the first time in seven games when Alan Browne's header gave them a surprise lead against Serbia.

But they ended up losing courtesy of a goal from Dusan Vlahovic and a brace from Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic, although James Collins grabbed a late consolation in the 3-2 loss.

The evening's shock result, meanwhile, saw the Netherlands fall to a 4-2 defeat to Turkey in a dramatic encounter in Istanbul, with a Burak Yilmaz treble condemning the Dutch to a nightmare start to their campaign.

And Donny van de Beek's woes continued, with the Manchester United attacking midfielder an unused substitute during the encounter.

Elsewhere there is concern for Arsenal as Martin Odegaard went off injured at half-time in Norway's 3-0 win over Gibraltar after painfully rolling his ankle, and the Gunners will be desperately hoping it is nothing too serious.

Antoine Griezmann moved level with David Trezeguet as France's fourth all-time top scorer as his 34th international goal, but his side were held to a frustrating 1-1 home draw with Ukraine.

And West Ham's Tomas Soucek scored an impressive hat-trick as Czech Republic romped to a 6-2 victory against Estonia.

Ireland were also well beaten by Serbia (PA)
