Over €1million worth of cocaine and €70,000 in cash has been seized and an Irish man was arrested as part of an international operation involving the Gardai and Dutch police.
An Garda Síochána, through the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau, and Dutch police have worked together to target an organised crime group that includes a number of Irish nationals suspected of being involved in the large scale trafficking of cocaine from The Netherlands to Ireland.
Yesterday, Dutch police searched a premise in Amsterdam and seized 16kg of cocaine.
The drugs have an estimated Irish street value of €1.12million.
One Irish male, aged 40, was arrested and was last night being detained.
At the same time, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau searched five premises, located in Counties Meath and Dublin.
About €70,000 in cash as well as a motor vehicle and encrypted electronic communication devices were seized during these searches.
Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll, Serious and Organised Crime, said: “Through working together, we can effectively tackle transnational organised crime groups.”
Investigations are ongoing and additional arrests are anticipated.
