International Garden Photographer of the Year 2020: Flowers and fields among stunning black and white pictures

Still lifes, calm rivers and raindrops on a lily pond make up the gorgeous winning and commended black and white entries to International Garden Photographer of the Year.

Anne McIntyre’s detailed photograph of two white cosmos flowers took the top prize. Entitled “Ethereal Cosmos”, she shot the picture in her white summerhouse.

The judges said of her work: “It is easy to turn any colour photograph into black and white, but through clear intent Anne chose the setup before photographing to dramatic effect; both the black and the whites are punchy and incredibly detailed.

“This work uses black and white to add something special, not take it away.”

Alan Price’s “Long-tailed Tits” and Allan Wright’s “Twin Oak Dawn” came in second and third place, with a number of landscape shots and close up images of wildlife also commended.

Entries came in from the UK, Australia, Iceland, New Zealand, Germany, Austria and the United States, to be judged by a panel including John Humphrys, photographers Benedict Brain and Clive Nicholls, Emma Chandler and Rebecca Harfield from Kew Gardens and head of IGPOTY Tyrone McGlinchey.

The winning photographs will be displayed in an exhibition at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 2021.
