USHIKU, Ibaraki -- A painting created by Japanese and Lithuanian students for a collaborative learning project is currently on display at Okuno Elementary School in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture.
Half of the 1.5 meter-high and 3.6 meter-wide artwork was painted by students from the school, while the other half was completed by students from Simon Dach school in Klaipeda, Lithuania.
Part of the Art Mile International Cooperation Learning Project, the piece is meant to enable people from the same generation in different parts of the world to learn from one another.
Pupils from the two schools chose the themes of the painting after discussing environmental problems among other issues.
"An abundant and border-less world" was the theme of the right half of the artwork created by the Okuno pupils. The half-completed piece was sent to Lithuania in December. "Ocean preservation" was the theme of the left side created by students at Simon Dach, which sent the painting back to the Japanese school after it had been completed. The piece features the national flags of both countries as well as depictions of scenery.
It took about four months to complete the piece including the discussion period. "I could see cultural differences in the style of drawing and coloring, such as the color of waves and the shape of the mountains," a 12-year-old Okuno pupil said.
The painting is set to go on display at an Olympic venue.
