The number of international flights to and from Japan early this month is expected to decrease by about 40% compared to flight plans before the spread of infections with the new coronavirus, it has been learned.
According to international flight plans for the one-week period from Sunday to Saturday compiled by the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, a total of about 5,600 round trips had been planned for the week as of Jan. 20. However, the figure had declined to about 3,500 as of Monday.
Flights to and from mainland China will fall by about 80%, to and from Taiwan by about 40% and to and from South Korea by more than 20%.
According to the ministry, most of the drop has been seen in East Asian flights. However, the number of people infected with the virus has been increasing worldwide, especially in Italy, so the number of international flights to and from Japan may drop further.
