Intermediate Cup semi-finals as Crumlin Star and Portstewart progress to showpiece final

Crumlin Star will meet Portstewart in the final of this season's Match Intermediate Cup.

Star saw off Banbridge Rangers on Tuesday while Portstewart edged past Queen's University last night.

Banbridge Rangers pushed Crumlin Star all they way in the first semi at Holm Park before losing out to a James Doyle injury time winner – his second goal of the evening.

It was the Mid-Ulster men who struck first when centre-forward Josh Cahoon reacted well to flick home a Stuart Mallon header past Crumlin keeper Shane Harrison after only seven minutes.

However, on 38 minutes Rangers keeper Bryan McMullen failed to get decent length on a clearance after he had come outside his box, and Crumlin's Paddy McIlkenny clipped a right foot shot over his head as he retreated back towards his goal.

James Doyle, Star's two-goal hero of the quarter-final win over Annagh United, again came to fore after the break.

He put his side ahead after 52 minutes, and then when the game looked poised to go into extra-time following Cahoon's equaliser, he broke the hearts of a brave Banbridge Rangers team by notching the winner in the dying moments of the game.

Meanwhile, a second-half goal from a Karl Steele free-kick was enough to send Portstewart through to the final of the Match Intermediate Cup in last night's semi-final at Dixon Park, Ballyclare.

Steele, who equalised against Banbridge Town on Saturday from a free, scored the vital goal after both teams had played out a cagey first 45 without score.
