Interiors: New trends for a new year - in pictures

New trends for a new year: Pretty rug
Playfulness
Emily Chalmers, stylist, author and founder of Caravan shop
Even the most serious decorators are adding quirky touches. Designer Abigail Ahern recently designed a fun range for Debenhams with hare and dog lamps, and much of Nathalie Lété’s work is inspired by children’s toys – an emerging trend. I love her latest design, a hand-tufted doll-face rug

New trends for a new year: So Sottsass cushions
Graphic and geometric pattern
Max Fraser, author of London Design Guide 2014-15 and deputy director of the London Design Festival
The economic uncertainty of the past few years has made us hunt for familiarity, favouring natural patinas and solid materials. As economic optimism returns, so too comes confidence and we’ll increasingly see graphic and geometric patterns and a more energetic colour palette across everything from accessories through to wall coverings.

New trends for a new year: Emma Davies wire vessels
Anything goes
Holly Becker, stylist, founder of decor8blog.com and author of Decorate
I predict that a fresh, urban “anything goes” style will be big next year – juicy patterns mixed with handmade items with global influences from Africa to the Outback, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean. There’ll be lots of colourful baskets and ceramics, but nothing twee. It’s all about what makes you happy.

New trends for a new year: Crown paint
Defined colour flow
Kate Baxter, stylist and blogger at fabricofmylife.co.uk
Defined blocks of colour with visible boundaries will replace the ombre affect. This trend is particularly fun to do yourself and creates a dramatic impact on stair treads, furniture or an entire wall if you’re feeling brave. I love these bands of fresh shades in Crown Paint’s new spring/summer 2014 palette.

New trends for a new year: Fonteyn bed
Hotel style
Marcus Fairs, founder of dezeen.com
Homes are becoming more like hotels. With space and time at a premium we’ll see flats with compact bathrooms integrated with the bedroom; furniture that’s easy to vacuum under and space-saving closets.

New trends for a new year: Happy Piece baskets
Modern bohemia
Emily Henson, stylist and author of Modern Rustic
I’m seeing more and more of an earthy, bohemian style in Los Angeles. Obviously LA’s sunny weather lends itself to that laidback vibe, but, done right, it can translate to the UK. Just layer rugs, add huge potted plants, macramé wall hangings and floor pillows in African and Navajo prints.
Include something modern to make sure it doesn’t get too retro.
