Two venues for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics were unveiled to the media Thursday as their construction nears its end.
The Tokyo Aquatics Center is more than 90 percent built and is due to be finished in February, while Ariake Arena is due to be completed next month. Both are being constructed in the coastal area of Koto Ward, Tokyo.
At the Tokyo Aquatics Center, nearly finished is the construction of the swimming pool, which can be adjusted in its length and depth, and the diving tower that has five separate platform heights from 1 meter to 10 meters.
After the Games, the center will be used as a venue for international swimming competitions and other events by reducing the number of seats by 10,000 to about 5,000.
As for Ariake Arena, where Olympic volleyball and Paralympic wheelchair basketball events will be held, the interior uses about 800 cubic meters of timber from Tokyo and other locations to express a Japanese taste. A private company is to operate the arena after the Games to use it as a venue for concerts or sporting events.
