Interior designer shares three bedroom colours to avoid if you want a good night's sleep

When it comes to decorating your bedroom, it can be tempting to go for your all-time favourite colour and cover every wall with it, as bright and as exuberant as your tastes may be. Care should be taken to make sure you pick a colour scheme that will help you drift off at night, however, as you want to wake up as refreshed as possible in the morning.

Fortunately for those currently testing out paint samples, an interior design expert has come forward to reveal the three colours you should avoid at all costs if you want to get a good night's sleep.

Taking to TikTok, interior architect Phoenix Grey told his followers: "Colour has so much energy, so keep that in mind as it reflects in your space."

Phoenix, who goes by the username @mrphoenixgrey, encouraged people to avoid the colour red at all costs in the bedroom, as this is a 'high energy' option.

He explained: "Inflammatory emotions activate the mind for a colour like this that you can't really be comfortable, relax and fall asleep."

Home decorators were also urged to dodge light green shades, which Phoenix says 'never look as nice as you think they will', especially when they 'envelop an entire room'. He noted that this is even true when it comes to the currently on-trend seafoam shade of green.

Offering a more bedtime-friendly alternative, Phoenix advised: "If you like green, commit to a moodier tone for your bedroom to give a much cosier look."

Yellow will help wake you up in the morning, but isn't much good for getting a good night's sleep (Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Phoenix went on to list yellow as another colour that, despite often being very beautiful, doesn't work all that well when creating a relaxing bedroom environment.

He continued: "That is another high energising colour and the last thing you want is it in your bedroom. It is great to wake up to in the mornings because it energises you, and gets you ready to go, but going to bed at night, it is going to be the least calming colour to work with."
