Interim coach Odell Haggins deflects questions about interviewing for FSU head coaching job

Florida State interim coach Odell Haggins said he is not focused on earning a new job.

He's focused on the present and the Seminoles' upcoming game against rival No. 11 Florida at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 in Gainesville, Fla.

247Sports.com's Brendan Sonnone reported Haggins interviewed for the head coaching position Sunday following FSU's 49-12 win over Alabama State. He has gone 2-0 since temporarily replacing fired coach Willie Taggart.

Haggins played it close to the vest following practice on Wednesday when asked about the report.

"Really, my main concern now is getting ready for the University of Florida," he said.

Haggins is 4-0 as interim coach during two stints, in 2017 and 2019, and has led FSU to bowl eligibility both times.

Haggins has made several moves in recent weeks, promoting Jim Leavitt and Mario Edwards Sr. to on-field coaching positions. Recruiting coordinator David Kelly is no longer on staff and that, along with Taggart's departure, made room for Leavitt and Edwards to serve as assistant coaches. With no recruiting coordinator, Haggins said the entire coaching staff is currently pitching in and recruiting is going well.

The Seminoles currently have 17 commitments in their 2020 recruiting class, ranking 18th in the country, according to 247Sports.com's composite rankings.

When asked about quarterback Jordan Travis' potential, Haggins deflected the question and instead talked about next week's matchup with the Gators.

"Right now, we're looking at the now. We're looking, and we got to play the University of Florida," Haggins said. "That's who we're preparing for as a football team. I don't want to look too far ahead. We're playing the University of Florida a week and a half from now."
