Facial recognition ticket wickets were among a cache of cutting-edge technological tools unveiled to media Monday, ahead of an event to celebrate the opening of Takanawa Gateway Station in Minato Ward, Tokyo.
The event, the Takanawa Gateway Fest, will launch Tuesday in front of the newest station on the JR Yamanote Line in a plaza in front of the station. A tent-shaped hall, event and lawn spaces have been set up.
Visitors can experience and use some of the most advanced technologies being developed by East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) at booths and sites located in the venue space.
Aside from the facial recognition ticket wickets where passengers can pass through gates without the current requirement of reaching for and scanning train IC cards on readers, a digital art museum that projects the scenery from outside train windows onto spaces around seats is set to be included.
The event lasts until Sept. 6. Prior reservations are necessary to enter the event's venue and experience the use of the high-tech devices.
