Interactive map shows where thousands in Leeds are signing Brexit petiton with 1.3 million signatures

In the immediate aftermath of Boris Johnson's decision to prorogue parliament, an online petition was set up to campaign against the Prime Minister's controversial move.

In the space of just 24 hours, it has gained more than a million signatures - including plenty from disillusioned Leeds constituents.

The 'do not prorogue parliament' petition argues that 'parliament must not be prorogued or dissolved unless and until the Article 50 period has been sufficiently extended or the UK's intention to withdraw from the EU has been cancelled'.

Mr Johnson's divisive announcement means that parliament will not sit for a month from Thursday, September 12.

Critics suggest that the shutdown may stop pro-EU politicians from putting a law in place to prevent a no-deal Brexit, with the House of Commons speaker John Bercow describing the move as 'a constitutional outrage'.

It seems as though around 15,000 people in Leeds alone agree, with the petition continuing to gather pace.

Some areas of Leeds have given more backing to the campaign than others.

More than 3,500 have signed the petition Leeds North East, which includes the likes of Chapel Allerton, Roundhay and Alwoodley.

However, less than 1,000 people have signed it in Leeds East, the constituency held by Richard Burgon MP - a close ally to Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Almost 1,500 people have signed the petition in Morley and Outwood, the constituency held by vocal Brexit campaigner Andrea Jenkyns MP.

The figures in this story are correct as of midday on Thursday, August 29.
