Interactive map reveals ten Edinburgh coronavirus death hotspots, including stricken Leith street

The National Records of Scotland have today (17 June) released a breakdown of COVID deaths by local area.

The data shows that there are ten zones in Edinburgh that registered over 10 deaths between March and May 2020.

The worst-hit area was Liberton West and the Braid Hills, which registered 26 deaths during that time period.

It was followed by Craiglockhart with 22 deaths.

Albert Street in Leith was also hit hard by COVID-19, with 16 deaths in the area alone.

Granton and Royston Mains were another area with over 10 deaths, registering 12 COVID-deaths in that timeframe.

The National Records of Scotland (NRS) said the death rate was 2.1 times higher in the poorest areas.

The NRS analysis confirmed an association with underlying health problems.

Of those who died with COVID in May, 92% had at least one pre-existing condition.

Director of statistical services Pete Whitehouse said: "Every death from this virus is a tragedy.

"These statistics, alongside the other important evidence being made available by the Scottish government and Health Protection Scotland (HPS), are valuable to the understanding of the progress and impact of the Covid-19 virus across Scotland."
