Interactive art displays coming to Liverpool to highlight impact of the pandemic

A new art project is coming to Liverpool highlighting how the COVID-19 pandemic has “impacted and united” communities across the city.

Visible Virals has been created by Culture Liverpool and the city’s Public Health team to reflect on people's experiences of coronavirus and to “boost community spirit”.

Over six weeks, digital screens, street art and installations will be on display in public spaces across Liverpool. People are encouraged to get involved digitally, on social media or physically.

To take part on social media, you can use the hashtag #wearescousers and the slogan “It’s in our DNA” to show how communities have come together.

The art installations will also educate people by explaining how and why viruses spread, and how measures such as social distancing, hand washing, face coverings and fresh air help to stop the spread.

The finale of the project, which has had funding from Arts Council England and Public Health Liverpool, will take place on the second anniversary of the first lockdown, Wednesday, March 23, at the Museum of Liverpool.

Digital screens and projections will draw on the collection of archive materials from the pandemic and there will also be interactive games and installations.

Director of Public Health Liverpool, Matthew Ashton, said: “Behind closed doors across the city, Covid-19 impacted on communities across Liverpool. ‘Visible Virals’ gives us a chance to tell the stories of people’s experience of lockdown and the pandemic, provoking discussion and sharing experiences.

“It is also a chance to shine a spotlight on the incredible community spirit that exists in our city that has shone through over the last two years.

If you want to get involved with ‘Visible Virals’, two drop-in events are being held next week for people to share their experiences. The sessions will be filmed for inclusion in the project and the next Public Health Annual Report.

One session is being held on Thursday, February 17, at The Liverpool Lighthouse, Oakfield Road, Anfield, L4 0UF from 11am to 2pm.

The second drop-in session is on Friday, February 18 at The Florrie, Mill Street, Dingle, L8 4RF from 11am to 2pm.
