Inter Milan issue transfer update on Alexis Sanchez amid Man Utd flop's struggles

Inter Milan are set on keeping Alexis Sanchez until the end of the extended season despite the on-loan Manchester United forward's poor campaign.

Chilean star Sanchez moved to the San Siro last summer on a season-long loan as he looked to revive his career after a dire start to life at United.

But the 31-year-old has only managed one goal and three assists in his 15 appearances for Inter, missing much of the season with a serious ankle injury.

Nonetheless, sporting director Piero Ausilio insists Sanchez will be given the chance to shine during the run-in.

With his loan set to expire on 30 June, the Italian giants hope to keep the former Arsenal man until the end of the extended season.

"We want to keep everyone, including Alexis Sanchez. We are counting on him in the coming months," Ausillo told Sky Sports Italia .

"He was out injured for quite a while, but he did well before that in matches against Barcelona and Sampdoria. I saw the Sanchez from his best campaigns in Udinese and Arsenal.

"He didn’t have a lot of time, but he now has the chance to show his value and then we will make a decision on him."

Inter are currently contributing £100,000 per week towards Sanchez's wages and United are likely to be happy to agree to an extension of his loan.

The Nerazzurri are also keen to extend former United star Ashley Young's contract after the ex-England man swapped the Premier League for the Serie A in January.

Inter are currently third in the league, nine points behind leaders Juventus with a game in hand.

Romelu Lukaku, another former United man, has been a stand out performer for Antonio Conte's side and is the third top scorer in the division.

The Belgian has netted 23 goals and provided five assists across 35 appearances in all competitions after signing for £74million last summer.
