Inter Milan issue Mauro Icardi transfer statement after Wanda Nara's latest comments

Inter Milan are still actively looking to sell striker Mauro Icardi after CEO Beppe Marotta hit out at claims made by the player's wife, Wanda Nara.

Icardi has been dumped by new boss Antonio Conte this summer, with the Argentine not in the ex-Chelsea chief's plans at San Siro.

Icardi has has bagged 124 goals in 219 games during six seasons at the club, but has seen his No.9 shirt handed to Romelu Lukaku and didn't feature during pre-season.

He again missed out as Inter thrashed Lecce in their Serie A opener on Monday night.

But speaking over the weekend, his wife/agent claimed that - with the European transfer deadline drawing nearer - club president Steven Zhang had told Icardi to hold out amid potential interest from Napoli and stay put.

“Right now [Conte] is not letting [Icardi] play but maybe he will,” Nara said on Mediaset TV show Tiki Taka .

“I'm not waiting for anything. Maybe someone told him to stay. Who? Maybe the one who runs the club.

"We have many friends in Naples. It's true - he has said no to every destination that is not Inter.

"Everyone has known his choice since the start of the summer and that is the case for any team that has shown interest. In my view, at the end of the day, he will remain at Inter.

"He doesn't believe it's over at Inter. I don't know what's going to happen, but I do know his words when the transfer market opened. He has stayed consistent.

"There were offers that no player in the world would have turned down, but he said no for Inter."

Those suggestions have drawn the ire of Marotta, who refuted Nara's claims and admitted his irritation with the comments as he stated that the plan to sell Icardi hadn't changed.

“We greeted Wanda Nara’s comments with a pinch of irritation, both for the timing and the method,” Marotta told DAZN.

“I can also categorically deny that someone at the club told Icardi to stay at Inter, especially not President Steven Zhang.

“The strategy Inter have taken is precise and we communicated it clearly in the right time-frame. We’ll continue like this to the end and nobody at Inter can change this common approach that is shared by everyone.”

Inter are continuing to seek a buyer for Icardi, despite his refusal to engage with any potential suitors, as they look to land Manchester United's Alexis Sanchez.

Inter remain in talks with United over a loan deal for the Chilean forward, as Conte seeks to reunite him with former Old Trafford teammate Lukaku in a new-look attack.
