Inter Milan chief offers cryptic update on Ashley Young speculation

Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta has refused to rule out a move for Manchester United captain Ashley Young in the January transfer window.

Inter have emerged as potential suitors for Young, 34, who has been the subject of a transfer enquiry from the Serie A leaders. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated United will resist any major outgoings this month.

Young's contract expires in the summer, and he is free to talk to foreign clubs as he has entered the last six months of his contract. Latest suggestions have claimed United have offered Young a new contract in an attempt to keep him at Old Trafford, but he may still move to Serie A either in this January transfer window or in the summer when his deal expires.

Reports from Italy on Thursday claimed Young was close to joining Milan, and had even taken a call from former United striker Romelu Lukaku persuading him to move to the San Siro.

Now, Marotta has addressed the speculation, offering a cryptic answer when asked about Inter's chances of signing Young, as well as responding to rumours linking Inter forward Matte Politano with rivals AC Milan.

"Politano and Young? At the moment, there are many rumours, we are all active," Marotta said, via Calciomercato.

"In general, you know very well that what hasn't already been done can be done tonight," he said, indicating a deal could be near.

Young has made 261 appearances for United since joining in 2011, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League during his time at Old Trafford. He became permanent captain this summer when Antonio Valencia left the club.
