Intensive action against helmetless rides, honking: Mumbai police commissioner

MUMBAI: “Now bikers and motorists can expect stringent action if they are caught honking or riding without a helmet as they do not seem to fear the law,” Mumbai police commissioner Sanjay Pandey warned through his Sunday Facebook Live session.

Pandey will be holding a meeting with the city traffic police to decide on the course of stringent action against the menace of honking and helmetless riding.

Pandey said wrong-side driving showed results but not honking and riding without a helmet.

“The strategy will be chalked out with the traffic police during the meeting on Monday and stern action will be ensured against those caught,” he said.

The traffic police action report showed the real menace is bikers riding without a helmet. A total of 1.23 lakh bikers were caught for riding without helmets and licences of 4,538 were suspended for three months. Another 9,859 were booked for wrong-side driving were booked between March 6 and April 30. Most of these were delivery boys.

The report said that in the last 55 days, the traffic police have taken action against 2,608 for honking, 37,115 for driving through one way, 1.50 lakh were booked for violating parking rules, and 31,204 motorists were booked for not wearing seat belts.
